Sep 28, 2017 The changes in Gradius V mark a positive evolution for the series. Gradius Gaiden is perhaps the better title when it comes to stage design, but the Option controls make this one notably unique, and definitely one of the best shooters on the PS2. Certain editions also came with a bonus DVD with assorted promo videos.
A little restraint and a willingness to defy tradition has transformed a has-been shooter series into a bright new star. The Vic Viper returns in Gradius V - the first title in Konami's classic space-shooter series that has been specifically designed for the Sony PlayStation 2. Gradius V preserves the franchise's classic gameplay and features stunning 3D graphics, inspired game design elements and a new control scheme that gives players more power than ever. Gradius V offers the choice of four different weapon configs prior to takeoff. All load-outs include basics like speed-up, laser and multiples. The big differences come in how each config treats its multiples. For example, the first load-out plays just like traditional Gradius games; the options merely follow the ship's movement.
A new twist comes in the R1 button, which makes each config's options do something different. Also features music composed by Hitoshi Sakimoto (FF Tactics, Vagrant Story, Ogre Battle, and Radiant Silvergun). PS2 Reviews Sep 14, 2004Much has been said concerning the death of shooters, but they're still very much alive. If only in the way that a zombie is. A shrinking pool of dedicated developers pump out a number of ultra-hardcore bulletfests each year, and these games tend to be good. But they completely miss the mass-market; most don't even escape Japan. What happened to the days when anyone could enjoy shooting down a few hundred aliens for a quarter?
The games got too hard and complicated, and the public lost interest in the graphics. Are shooters destined to occupy an ever-smaller niche?
PS2 Previews Aug 5, 2004Fall 2003, they said. Here we are in the latter half of summer 2004, and Gradius V has just now been released in Japan. Yes, Konami's classical update has been a long time coming. Too long for us poor shooter fans, who miserably track the release dates of every entry into our near-extinct genre with the fevered intensity of a heart patient scrabbling for their pills. Thankfully, it seems the wait has been very, very worthwhile. I've been doodling around with a demo version that Konami passed along, and I'll be darned if Gradius V isn't looking like the best shooter I've played in years.
And believe me, I play most of them.
